We had some snowflakes last Thursday, and then today
a couple inches of wet snow.

Therapiezimmer/therapy room |
Today was the last day for one of the occupational therapists, Heidi V, who was moving to England with her engineer husband for a change/adventure. The
staff got together to give her an unusual going away gift: a gift basket full
of items for baking, since she loves to bake. But the items even included eggs!
Plus flour, sugar, and mostly flavored extracts and decorations like sprinkles
icings, silver balls, etc. I think it’s great when a couple can agree on such
an adventure.
Jan & Kirby are another such couple. As a
therapist for cerebral palsy, Jan had heard the best place to work was in
Switzerland. Kirby willingly agreed to come along, even though it meant renting
their house and his leaving a good job. At first here in Switzerland he had a
demeaning job, but now he has an appropriate one as a special education teacher
in the CP Kindergarten.
It seems I will never find such a husband!
That evening it was raining as I ran down to the
Biel-Evilard funicular to meet Jan & Kirby.
Funicular ticket |
Took the funicular up to Leubringen
to the unimaginatively named Station Restaurant next door. But inside it was
elegant with white linen tablecloths, flowers and candles, a fireplace in one
corner, several antique clocks, and large plate-glass windows with views of
Biel. We had reservations at 19:00, but the place was quite empty and we could
pick our table. Of course we chose one by the window to look through the rain
at the twinkling lights below. We were given hefty menus, but we already knew
we were getting the “special,” the Fondue Chinoise (18 CHF/$9 instead of 26 CHF/$13). Started out with a salad of
julienned carrots, beets, and something white, plus lettuce and red cabbage. We
had a red Beaujolais wine that I could sip, and water. They brought out plates
with a variety of sauces the consistency of mayonnaise (including mayonnaise)
with curry, chives, or onions. There were also finely chopped parsley and
onions, some maraschino cherries, pearl onions, and a pickle. We were then
given plates of thinly sliced raw meats (beef). A fondue pot of water was
placed over a sterno flame in the center of the table. We used wooden sticks to
spear the slices of meat and placed them in the boiling water to cook. You then
dipped the meat in a sauce and ate it. It was a delicious and fun meal!
We took the funicular down to the halfway
point at Beaumont for .70 CHF/35 cents and walked to the Personalhaus/staff residence in the windy rain. Jan’s umbrella turned inside out in
the wind. Stopped in Jan & Kirby’s room for coffee and chocolates.
